2005-03-12: Brian Nichols Captured by Gwinnett SWAT Team

(Saturday 3/12/05 @ approximately 09:34AM) Uniformed officers responded to a 911 call from a female who stated that Brian Nichols was inside her apartment. This female resides at 3414 Ridge Brook Trail, the Bridge Water Apartments, which are located in the Duluth area of Gwinnett County.

Once on scene, officers met with the complainant at the leasing office of the apartment complex. The complainant stated that the black male who identified himself as "the one everyone is looking for, Brian Nichols", was inside her apartment alone, and that he was armed. After talking with the complainant, SWAT was activated, and secured the scene. No contact was ever made with the suspect. It is believed that the suspect observed the police activity outside the apartment, and chose to turn himself into authorities. The suspect positively identified as Brian Nichols turned himself in by exiting the apartment unarmed, and waiving a white shirt or towel. The suspect was taken into custody without incident. No shots were fired. He did not resist.

Once secured, the suspect was released to the FBI.

The scanner the audio is taken from is scanning all Gwinnett County channels until around 10:45am. From 10:45am onwards (when the SWAT team begins arriving) the scanner is monitoring only the channel in use by police and SWAT units on the scene.

While listening to the audio you'll hear several codes used, you can look them up here. The 500-series units are regular zone cars from the central precinct, most of them are involved in the incident. The SWAT officers are referred to by their last name. You can read more information on how the 500-series units are broken down by going here.
