2007-09-06: Chase Starts With Suspects Pursuing Officer

Denver police have captured five suspects of an auto-theft ring this morning, following a wild chase that closed several major traffic arteries for hours.

The chase began around 2 a.m. Entrance ramps to I-270 from I-25, as well as ramps onto I-76 and U.S. 36 were closed. All roads were re-opened shortly after 6 a.m., police said.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said an undercover officer was watching suspected members of the auto-theft ring near 50th Avenue and Federal Boulevard when the suspects spotted the officer.

They went after the officer, who fled and radioed for marked patrol cars to assist him. As the patrol cars arrived, another suspect's car joined in the chase and crashed into a police car near 48th Avenue and Colorado.
